Reiki
靈氣
Reiki is a natural healing method developed by Mikao Usui in 1922. Its original name, Shinshin Kaizen Usui Reiki Ryoho (心身改善臼井靈氣療法), translates to Usui Reiki Therapy for the Improvement of Mind and Body. This hands-on technique is designed to support physical, mental, and emotional well-being—and can also be used to help release unwanted habits or patterns. Treatments may be given in person or from a distance.
At its core, Reiki is the process of a practitioner receiving healing energy from the universe and channeling it through their body to the recipient. This energy supports the body’s natural ability to heal itself.
All human beings are born with this innate healing capacity. Though it may lie dormant, Reiki training reawakens this ability, empowering anyone to tap into their own natural healing potential.
Jikiden Reiki

The official name of Jikiden Reiki is Shinshin Kaizen Usui Reiki Ryoho Jikiden Reiki (心身改善臼井靈氣療法 直傳靈氣), which means Usui Reiki Therapy for the Improvement of Mind and Body – Directly Passed Down Reiki.
While many styles of Reiki are practiced throughout the world today, they all trace their roots back to a single source: Shinshin Kaizen Usui Reiki Ryoho, the original healing method developed by Mikao Usui and taught by one of his most prominent students, Dr. Chujiro Hayashi, in the 1930s and 1940s.
Chiyoko Yamaguchi, co-founder of Jikiden Reiki, learned Reiki directly from Dr. Hayashi in 1938. She continued to practice Reiki in the same way he taught her for over 60 years. In the late 1990s, she was “rediscovered” by Western Reiki teachers who were seeking to learn Reiki in its original form. With their encouragement, Chiyoko Yamaguchi and her son, Tadao Yamaguchi, established the Jikiden Reiki Institute in Kyoto, Japan.
Jikiden Reiki faithfully preserves the authentic teachings of Dr. Hayashi as handed down by Usui Sensei. It is the only form of Reiki that has remained free from Western adaptations, offering a pure, direct connection to the original Japanese Reiki tradition.
Jikiden Reiki Treatment

Treatment for Physical Conditions
We experience illness when our body’s natural healing ability becomes weakened or blocked. During a Jikiden Reiki session, healing energy is transmitted through the practitioner’s hands to help restore balance and vitality. This gentle yet powerful energy activates and enhances your innate healing capacity, supporting your body’s return to optimal health.
Treatment for Psychological Conditions
(Seiheki Treatment)
Jikiden Reiki’s psychological treatment works on a deep energetic level to address the root causes of emotional and mental imbalances. Rather than relying on verbal processing, this method gently supports inner transformation by working at a deep emotional level, helping to release unresolved feelings and restore inner balance.
Distant Healing
(Enkaku Treatment)
You can receive a Jikiden Reiki treatment—whether physical or psychological—from the comfort of your own home. Although you and the practitioner are not in the same physical space, distant Reiki is just as effective as in-person treatment. Reiki energy is not limited by location—it naturally reaches where it is needed most, supporting your body and mind in restoring balance, clarity, and well-being.
FAQ
During a session, most people experience deep relaxation—and it’s not uncommon to fall asleep. You may feel warmth, tingling, or gentle energy movement in certain areas of your body, or you may feel nothing at all. Reiki works effectively regardless of what you feel during the treatment, as the energy naturally goes where it’s needed most.
No. You will receive healing while fully clothed.
Reiki often brings you into a state of deep, blissful relaxation. The healing energy itself is gentle and does not cause pain. However, at times you may notice mild discomfort or sensations in certain areas of your body as they respond to the energy and begin to release blockages. These temporary sensations are a natural part of the healing process—a sign that your body is working to let go of what no longer serves your well-being.
The number of sessions needed varies from person to person, depending on the nature of your symptoms and their underlying causes. Some individuals experience noticeable relief after just one session, while others benefit from a series of treatments to achieve deeper, lasting results. Many clients also choose to receive regular Reiki sessions as part of their ongoing self-care, helping to maintain balance, reduce stress, and support overall well-being. Reiki supports your healing at your own pace, gently guiding your body and mind toward harmony.
You are not required to share personal details if you prefer not to. At the beginning of the session, you’ll simply be asked to briefly describe the issue in a few words—just enough to help direct the healing appropriately. However, if you do feel the need to talk, Haruyo brings the added perspective of being a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), offering a safe, supportive space for those who wish to explore their concerns more deeply.
At the beginning of your appointment, we’ll connect briefly by Zoom or phone to discuss your health needs and intentions for the session. Once your practitioner has a clear understanding, you’ll be asked to disconnect from the call. You can then lie down or sit comfortably and simply relax while receiving Reiki for the remainder of the session.
Absolutely—there are no prerequisites to learn Jikiden Reiki. Anyone who attends the seminar can begin using Reiki immediately. After completing the Shoden seminar, you’ll be able to give Reiki for physical conditions. The Okuden seminar builds on this foundation, allowing you to work with psychological or emotional issues as well.
Whether you’re looking to help loved ones, enhance your professional healing practice, or deepen your own self-care, Jikiden Reiki offers a simple, natural, and deeply effective method grounded in authentic Japanese tradition. Many students find that learning Reiki not only empowers them to support others but also brings a profound sense of clarity, purpose, and inner peace.
Yes! Reiki can help ease pain, stress, and discomfort in animals. Just like humans, animals are highly receptive to this gentle healing energy—and many visibly relax or even fall asleep during a session. Reiki can be especially supportive for pets recovering from illness or surgery, experiencing anxiety, or nearing end-of-life. It offers a calm, non-invasive way to support their well-being and deepen the bond you share with them.
While it is recommended to take both seminars, it is not required. The Shoden seminar focuses on hands-on techniques for treating physical conditions and forms the foundation of Jikiden Reiki practice. The Okuden seminar builds on this by introducing Seiheki Chiryo (psychological treatment) and Enkaku Chiryo (distant healing), allowing you to support emotional healing and offer Reiki across distance.
Together, these seminars provide a comprehensive understanding of Reiki as it was traditionally taught in Japan, empowering you to support yourself and others with confidence and care.
Seminars are offered a few times throughout the year. If you’re interested or have questions, please feel free to contact me through this website for upcoming dates and availability. You can also ask to be added to the email list to receive updates about future classes and events.
